City of Melbourne fostering Biodiversity Custodianship

The City of Melbourne’s “Urban Nature” initiative is a comprehensive approach to integrating nature into the urban landscape, enhancing the liveability and sustainability of the city. Through this initiative, Melbourne aims to create vibrant, green spaces that improve the well-being of residents, support biodiversity, and mitigate the impacts of climate change. The concept of custodianship is that we all have a role to play in understanding and looking after the diverse species that share our urban habitats.

Urban Nature is a multifaceted program designed to transform Melbourne into a greener, more resilient city. It encompasses various projects and strategies aimed at maximising the benefits of nature within urban environments. From tree planting and green infrastructure to community engagement and education, Urban Nature seeks to enhance the natural elements of the city while addressing contemporary challenges such as urban heat, air pollution, and loss of biodiversity.

The City of Melbourne is partnering with local universities and knowledge hubs to trial innovative techniques that improve biodiversity in the municipality, share outcomes, and create public resources that can be used for future projects.
